Individual Counseling

At SHS we offer one-on-one tobacco cessation counseling that is geared towards the individual. We believe that quitting is a journey and can be one that requires support and encouragement. Our program incorporates techniques that engages the person in the entire process and helps them to develop problem solving abilities towards their use and examine underlying behaviors that effect their tobacco use, ultimately helping them on their own journey. This program aims to help develop the person as a whole, help a person quit, and help prevent relapse.

The first session is typically 45 minutes and then each session thereafter is about 30 minutes. Participants should arrive approximately 15 minutes early for all appointments. At the first appointment, participants will be asked to fill out paperwork that helps the cessation specialist to assess their current level of use, their reason for wanting to quit, their level of nicotine dependence, and reasons for why they smoke. At this session the ideas for the remaining sessions will be discussed and the beginning of a framework for further sessions developed.

Most people see the cessation specialist once a week at the beginning of their journey. Then, as they progress, they progress to having appointments every other week, then every three weeks, then once a month, ultimately ending in an as needed appointment.

Additionally, over the counter and pharmaceutical nicotine replacement therapy can be a part of the cessation plan in conjunction with our medical clinic and pharmacy. It is important to remember that our cessation specialist cannot prescribe medications, but can recommend options and help follow you through your journey and help you with the behavioral and support portions of the quitting process.

The cost is FREE for fee-paid (those having paid the health fee) students and is $10 first session and then $ 5 each session thereafter for faculty and staff and non-fee paid students.

If you would like to make an appointment, please call 336.334.5340 (option #2).
