Getting Your Prescriptions Filled
Frequently Asked Questions
- What if a doctor outside of the UNCG health center wrote my prescription?
No problem! If you have the written prescription, just bring it to the Pharmacy and we will fill it if we have the medication in stock. The SHS Pharmacy only carries about 300 different drugs (whereas a retail pharmacy carries over 1000), so you might want to call ahead to make sure we carry what you need.
- Why don't you carry more drugs?
In the interest of cost containment, we try to stock drugs that are used by a large number of students and we try to avoid drugs that are seldom used by students. This means that we don’t tie up resources in medications that just sit on the self and might go out of date (and result in a financial loss).
- Can my doctor from home call in a prescription to the SHS Pharmacy?
Yes, if it’s a medication that we carry, they can call the pharmacy directly at 336-334-3348 or the prescription can be faxed to 336-334-5343.
- I don’t have my written prescription anymore. When I got it filled at the drug store, the pharmacist kept the written order. Can I get that prescription filled at the SHS Pharmacy?
Drug stores are required to keep original prescription orders in their files. If you will bring your container from that drug store to the SHS Pharmacy, we can call your drug store and get the prescription transferred by phone. Sometimes this takes a day or two, so plan ahead a little for this one.
- Can someone else pick up my medication for me?
Sure, just call ahead so we’ll know it’s OK with you.
- What do I do about getting my prescriptions over the summer if I'm not in summer school?
If you have a prescription on file that has refills, you can get those refills during the summer if you plan to return in the Fall or have paid the summer health fee. We can only fill new prescriptions if you have paid the summer health fee.
- What do I do about getting prescriptions after I graduate?
We can refill current prescriptions for 1 semester after you graduate. We can’t fill any new prescriptions and after one semester, we can’t do any more refills. If you have refills left on the prescription after 1 semester, we can transfer these to a local pharmacy. If refills are cheaper for you here, you should consider getting all of those within the 1 semester time frame.
- I’m moving out of the area after I graduate. What can I do about my refills?
The easiest thing to do is get all the refills before you graduate. This will probably save you time and money. If you don't get all the refills before you leave, have the pharmacy you plan to use in your new location call us, and we can transfer your remaining refills by phone.
