Group Therapy

Group therapy is one of the many forms of assistance offered at the Counseling and Testing Center. Group therapy is a small group setting in which students with similar concerns meet face-to-face with one or two therapists for typically an hour and a half. During group therapy, members talk about what is of concern to them and may provide feedback to each other. Feedback includes expressing your own feelings to others about what they say or do in the group. Interaction between group members is anticipated and provides each person an opportunity to learn about and try out new ways of interacting and relating.

Groups at CTC are facilitated by trained professionals. There are several different groups to choose from that meet each semester. You will usually experience group with the same people throughout the semester. If you are a student at UNCG, you are eligible to participate in a group; however, some groups have a specific focus and thus only certain groups may be relevant for you. You will have the opportunity to meet with a group facilitator to see if group is right for you.

Confidentiality is imperative to the development of trust and a feeling of safety within group counseling. People who join groups are expected to keep the content of the sessions confidential. What people talk about or disclose in a group must remain among the members of that group. It is not appropriate for a member to disclose events of the group or information about group members to an outside person. Trust also depends on all group members making a commitment to attend and participate in each session.
